The Dalton School
5th Grade Walk-a-thon 2001
After the World Trade Center Disaster, the students in Ms. Gross's Fifth Grade House wanted to DO something as a class to help. The kids came up with a lot of ideas, and eventually decided to do a walk-a-thon. The rest of the Fifth Grade was also interested in helping, so the walk-a-thon quickly became a grade-wide effort. All the kids raised money by asking friends and family to pledge a certain amount per mile. They have raised a great deal of money so far (over $10,000.). It is still coming in.

On Thursday, October 11, 200, the entire Fifth Grade and their teachers and some chaperons walked to Dalton's local fire station on 85th Street between Lexington and Park, which lost nine of its firefighters on September 11th. There the students who had made cards gave them to the firefighters. The students also got a chance to see pictures of the nine men this station lost as well as all the cards and flowers the community has brought them. The firefighters graciously gave the students homemade cookies for visiting.

After the visit to the fire station, the students continued on their walk-a-thon. They walked to the park and walked around the reservoir on the bridal path. The reservoir is 1.6 miles around; the bridal path is more. Then they went by the Met and had lunch before returning to school.

The Fifth Graders decided to contribute the money they raised to The New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund. It is a non-profit organization that assists the families of fallen New York City firefighters and police officers. The Fund provides money to families at the time of a death to assist with immediate expenses. In addition, the fund distributes an annual check to each of the surviving families to help with education, housing and medical expenses.
