Alice Project

Personal Essay

Hi, my name is Keith and I am in the fourth grade at the Dalton School in New York City. I illustrated chapter called "Who Stole The Tarts". I did eleven different illustrations. My chapter takes place in a courtroom so picture #1 shows the setting.

My favorite drawing is probably where the guinea pig got suppressed by the court officer. I like this because the guinea pig had jumped up to cheer and the court officer was telling him to shh. Little did he know he was about to be thrown in a bag moments later and sat on! Poor pig.

To start my illustrations I looked at some of my teacher's Alice in Wonderland books. The first book I looked at was full of bright colors and the characters looked like they were really moving and the pictures looked very accurate. After that I decided I wanted to use bright markers rather than colored pencils. I think the bright markers make it look more like you're really there than the colored pencils do.

Picture #2 illustrates the misunderstanding between the letter and tea. I got pretty frustrated with picture #3 because it was very hard for me to make a king. I was influenced by my book that had the king look like a playing card so I made him look like that. I really liked it . Unfortunately I didn't want to make mine too big so some of it looks out of proportion.

Picture #4 is of the hare. That was to go with when he said "I deny it ". The hatter was talking and was trying to say something to the hare. The hare so very quickly said I deny it. The hatter was explaining this all to the king. I don't think we ever found out what the hare denied. I would have liked to have been able to make the hare look a little more nervous. I think he looks too happy.

The Dormouse, I wanted to make his teapot all colorful. I did this in colored pencil and I think it came out rather well. I put a nice bright pink for most of the tea pot part but then at the top where you would take the top off to put the tea bag in I colored it bright orange and colored the handle orange. I chose to illustrate the dormouse here because I wanted him in my chapter but I didn't think I could draw him scurrying across the courtroom. The dormouse is picture #5.

The other pictures I drew were pictures #10 and #11 which were Alice and a newspaper called The Wonderland Times . I did this because Alice was getting the wrong definition of the word suppressed and it was actually kind of cute and funny.

I did the picture of pepper when the duchess's cook walked in with the pepper box and was asked what the tarts were made of . In my mind I couldn't see a pepper box so I drew a shaker since we have one at home. This was picture #9.

My last picture was to be sort of like a scroll with a list of all the witnesses on it. I didn't want to put any other names on it because I wanted Alice to really stick out and sound important . I think this worked well. This is picture #8.

I enjoyed doing this because it was not only fun but you got to learn how much work an illustrator really has. He has to really read the words well so he can make the pictures go with the words. He has to make you see a picture in you mind. This was only a little taste for us because we only had to do a few pages it must take a very long time to do a whole book. I will appreciate from now on not only what the pictures looklike but what it took to make them I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
