Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Retold by David Blair. Illustrated by Graham Evernden. Philadelphia: Running Press. This is a miniature edition that my students have enjoyed handling. They are certainly very dark. Moser is the most adult oriented of any illustrator in my collection. Carroll, Lewis. (1989). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann Ltd. Rackham was an illustrator in the early part of this century known for many classics such as Cinderella. Introduction and notes by Martin Gardner. New York: Meridian. This is an extremely useful text to have on hand. The notes are excellent. Carroll, Lewis. (1986). The Complete Alice and The Hunting of the Snark. Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. London: Jonathan Cape Ltd. Difficult to find, but terrific. I bought this copy in England some years ago. Steadman is a cartoonist and his drawings are wild and witty. Carroll, Lewis. (1990). More Annotated Alice. Illustrated by Peter Newell. Notes by Martin Gardner. New York: Random House. A beautiful edition. The Newell drawings are delightful. His Alice is a sleek, longhaired child, very different from Tenniel's. Carroll, Lewis. (1966). The Nursery "Alice." Illustrated by John Tenniel. New York: Dover. My students have always gotten a kick out of this, Lewis Carroll's own adaptation for very young children. Carroll, Lewis. (1989). The Ultimate Illustrated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Compiled and arranged by Cooper Edens. New York: Bantam. If you can only get a couple of different editions, make this one of them. It is full of illustrations by many different artists. Gives a fine overview of all the different approaches to the illustration of this book. Carroll, Lewis. (1993).
