SIEGE TOWER OVERVIEW Siege towers were large, multistoried wooden structures used to shelter archers during attacks on cities. From the vantage point of the towers, which were higher than the city walls, the archers could direct a steady stream of arrows against the city's defenders. To prevent the defenders from setting the towers alight, they were aften covered by wet animal hides. These towers were often used in conjunction with battering rams to provide covering fire for the rams' crews.
