Palace of Sennacherib (704 - 681 BC)
Nineveh
Bas relief, detail
British Museum, London

Seated on his throne, attended by eunuchs, Sennacherib hears reports from officers. Assyrian officers can be identified by the maces they carry. With the invention of the helmet, the mace was no longer an effective weapon, but continued as a symbol of authority.
