I think a hero is someone always willing to help any creature. Someone who is always caring for others. A hero is not somone who always saves somebody's life but if he cares for somebody's life. For example, right now we have many heroes working downtown digging for bodies, hoping they will find some. They are never giving up until the missing sign goes down to 0. And it will go down to 0.
