Melissa's Alice Essay

My name is Melissa and I go to the Dalton School. In literature we studied Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We read the book and then everyone in my class chose a chapter from the book to make a toy theater play. We all got a partner and then you and your partner would make little characters, props, and write a script for the chapter you were assigned.

Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. He originally told it to a little girl named Alice Liddell. She loved it and he made it into a book for her and then for everyone else. It became a best seller! Lewis Carroll was not his real name.  His real name was Reverend Charles L. Dodgson. Lewis Carroll was his pen name.

I think it was really cool to see all of the illustrations. I saw lots of them because my teacher, Ms.Edinger collects them.  My favorite illustrator for the Alice books is Helen Oxenbury.

Altogether I really enjoyed our Alice study.

 Jeremy's Alice Essay

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll, formally known in his day as Charles Dodgson, told the daughter of Dean Liddell who was Dean of Christ Church university then, a story about a girl that fell down a rabbit hole and into Wonderland.  Now over 130 years later, we in the Edinger house class, at the Dalton School in New York City, have made a toy theater production adapted from Lewis Carol’s classic tale.

To start our 2.5-month project Ms. Edinger read A.A.W. out loud to us.  Every chapter we would swap different illustrated editions.  My personal favorite illustrator was the world famous Sir John Tenniel.  The other ones I like were Ralph Steadman, Anthony Browne, and Lewis Caroll.  Then we chose our favorite chapter that we would like to work on with a partner to make into a toy theater prodution.  I chose "The Pool of Tears" because I had some cool ideas on how to perform it.

After  the taping we made posters. I think it was a super project and I am glad we are finally done.
