History Collage
Created and Taught by Monica Edinger
With assistance from Kris Sternberg of the Dalton School
Thanks to 98 American Memory Fellows, Alison Westfall and Laura Mitchell, for the found poetry idea.

This unit was designed as a performance assessment for fourth graders at the end of a three month study of immigration.  Their immersion in the United States immigration experience had caused them to consider many issues faced by newcomers today and in the past.  Activities included reading informational and fictional texts about immigrants, viewing videos about immigration, field trips to Ellis Island and the Tenement Museum, mini-projects documenting how immigration has enriched New York City neighborhoods as well as the American culture, and an oral history project.

Learning Objectives Time Required

Approximately ten sessions of one hour each.  Some lessons may take more than one session depending on the children's previous experience. That is, those with less technology background will need more time than those with more experience.
