Dear 5th-into-6th
Graders,
Did you have
a good year? Did you enjoy the 5th grade research projects and activities?
Did you have time to read a few books you absolutely loved? We hope
that the answer to each is a definite YES! To read for pleasure can
be one of the most rewarding activities in life. Now that the school
year is coming to an end, we want to give you a parting gift in the
form of a reading list so you can continue to enjoy good books and good
stories over the summer.
Please read
at least three books from this list. You will
be asked to review one book for English after school starts again in
the fall. In addition, you need to read Roll of
Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. We will be discussing
it at the beginning of the 6th grade school year. We advise that you
finish it at the end of August or early September.
Of course,
we would like if you read a lot more than four books during the summer.
We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you back
in the new school year.

LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY (Historical Fiction)
Based on a little known piece of history, the island of Malaga Maine was
originally settled by Benjamin Darling a freed (or escaped) slave and
his white wife, Sarah Proverbs. More slaves followed. In the early 1900’s,
as the shipping industry began to fail in neighboring white mainland Philipsburg,
the town elders begin to see the poor community of Malaga as a possible
lucrative tourist attraction and proceed to destroy it. Schmidt’s
fictional portrayal of this story is told through the friendship between
Lizze Bright, a Malaga local and Turner Buckminster, the bullied new preacher’s
son and how they take a stand. Although the story is sad, there is much
humor and it is filled with feeling and imagery.
